Double Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE) is an advanced endoscopic technique that allows direct visualisation and intervention deep within the small intestine. It uses a flexible endoscope with two inflatable balloons that work in tandem to pleat and stabilise the bowel, allowing extended access beyond the reach of standard endoscopes.
DBE is used to diagnose and treat small bowel bleeding, strictures, inflammatory conditions such as Crohn’s disease, polyps, and tumours. It allows therapeutic actions such as biopsy, polypectomy, and dilatation to be performed during the same procedure.
Depending on the suspected location of disease, DBE may be performed orally (antegrade) or rectally (retrograde) under sedation or general anaesthetic. The procedure is generally safe, but risks include perforation, bleeding, and sedation-related complications.
Preparation involves fasting, and in some cases, bowel cleansing. Suitability is assessed during pre-procedure consultation.
